Alertness is a quality of the mind and the body.
If you bring the mind to a certain level of calmness, you touch the dimension that we call awareness.
If you go by the nature of your mind, whose content is largely based on social input, you will automatically seek bondage. You want to bond with people and hold on to things you come in contact with. By contrast, the nature of awareness is freedom. When the mind becomes absolutely still, you become free.
To move from compulsiveness to choice is evolutionary. But to move from choice to choicelessness is revolutionary.
The quality of human life will only truly change when we change within ourselves.
Unless the intellectual dimension is reinforced with an experiential dimension, it does not really become a life-altering process.
Meditation is not
an act, it is a
quality. Meditation is not something
you do—it is something that you become.
Meditation is like the fragrance of a flower. You cannot extract this fragrance; If it blossoms, fragrance spreads unconditionally.
The moment we utter the word “meditation,” there are all kinds of misconceptions about it. First of all the English word “meditation” doesn’t mean anything in the sense, if you close your eyes and sit, in English we call it “meditation.” You can sit with your eyes closed and do many things.
You cannot do meditation but you can become meditative. Meditation is a certain quality. It is not a certain act. If you cultivate your body, your mind, your energies and your emotions to a certain level of maturity, meditation will naturally happen. It is just like if you keep the soil fertile, if you give it the necessary manure and water and if the right kind of seed is there, it will grow and bloom into flowers and fruits.
